The Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases of Samarkand Medical University was one of the first departments established in the early years of the university’s activity. The department was organized in the 1932–1933 academic year and was located on the basis of the Therapeutic Department of the SamMI clinic. The founder and first head of the department was Professor S. P. Zavadsky from Leningrad.

Sergey Petrovich Zavadsky, a professor from Leningrad, was the founder and the first head of the Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases. He headed the department for only one and a half years. Along with him, Associate Professor A. R. Gekhtman and Assistant Yu. A. Tepper worked in the department. In 1934, after S. P. Zavadsky moved to the city of Tashkent, Associate Professor A. R. Gekhtman was appointed as the head of the department.

Associate Professor A. R. Gekhtman arrived at Samarkand Medical Institute from Leningrad in 1933 and initially worked as an associate professor in the Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases, later becoming the head of the department (1934–1936).
