HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Surgery, Endoscopy, and Anesthesiology-Reanimatology at the Faculty of Postgraduate Education of the Samarkand State Medical Institute was established in 1983. Its founder and first head—who was also the region's chief surgeon and a Candidate of Medical Sciences at the time—was Associate Professor A.I. Sidorenko (1983–1988). Associate Professors S.A. Abdullaev, O.M. Mamishev, and I.I. Ilyasov also worked in the department during that period.

Abdullayev S.A. Professor
Between 1993 and 1995, the department was reorganized into a course, only to be re-established as a department in 1995. At that time, the department was based at the surgical unit of Samarkand City Clinical Hospital № 1.
In 1997, the department was relocated to the surgical unit of Regional Combined Hospital № 1. Since 2000, the Samarkand Branch of the Republican Scientific Center for Emergency Medical Care has served as the department's clinical base.
Professor S.A. Abdullaev headed the department until the 2003–2004 academic year.
From the beginning of the 2004–2005 academic year, the department was headed by Professor J. A. Akhtamov, Doctor of Medical Sciences. Concurrently, he served as the director of the Samarkand branch of the Republican Scientific Center for Emergency Medical Care.
J. A. Axtamov Professor
In 1996 J. A. Akhtamov was among the first in the country to establish a multidisciplinary endoscopic surgery center at Samarkand City Clinical Hospital № 1, serving as the head of the department. Since 2002, the department has held the status of Regional Center for Endosurgery.
J. A. Akhtamov was also among the first in the country to introduce endoscopic surgeries involving the abdominal organs, the pelvic region, and the urinary tract into clinical practice.
In 1996, he founded the Ibn Sina Foundation for the promotion of medical technologies and the scientific-practical journal «Bulletin of the General Practitioner», which was regularly published by the foundation. He served as the journal's deputy editor-in-chief on a voluntary basis. At the same time, he worked as the executive secretary of the journal «Surgery of Uzbekistan». Professor J. A. Akhtamov has made a significant contribution to the development of endoscopic surgery in Samarkand and the Republic of Uzbekistan. Under his leadership, the Samarkand branch of the Republican Research Center for Emergency Medicine (RRCEM) implemented several treatment methods: the use of polypropylene meshes for large, giant, and recurrent incisional hernias of the anterior abdominal wall; the «Damage control» approach for traumatic injuries to abdominal parenchymal organs; and the «programmed laparostomy» technique for treating severe, advanced peritonitis, as well as conservative management strategies for traumatic injuries to abdominal parenchymal organs.
In 2008, under the supervision of Professor J.A. Akhtamov, Assistant I.Sh. Shonazarov successfully defended his Candidate of Medical Sciences dissertation titled «Principles for Improving the Prognosis and Treatment of Acute Adhesive Small Bowel Obstruction». During this period, the department's staff included Professor I.R. Rustamov, Associate Professor S.I. Narzullaev, Associate Professor M.T. Achilov, Assistant A.I. Ismailov (Candidate of Medical Sciences), Assistant F.O. Mizamov, and Assistant I.Sh. Shonazarov (Candidate of Medical Sciences).
From the 2008–2009 academic year until 2023, the department was headed by Associate Professor S.I. Narzullaev.

He defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in 1972.
In 1974, he was awarded the "Excellence in Healthcare" badge.
He has held the rank of Associate Professor since 1984. Sanat Inoyatovich makes a tremendous contribution to the education of young people, serving as a role model; he is an innovator and the initiator of many new developments and positive undertakings in the institute's public life. He is one of the pioneers in introducing laparoscopy for differential diagnostic purposes in the city of Samarkand.
S.I. Narzullaev generously shares his experience and extensive knowledge with young doctors, helps shape their new professional outlook, and introduces them to modern surgical technologies. He has participated in numerous international and national scientific and practical conferences and has published over 200 scientific papers, as well as 20 educational and methodological manuals.
In recognition of his significant achievements and contributions to public health, he was awarded the "Excellence in Healthcare" badge for the second time on the occasion of the Samarkand Medical Institute's 90th anniversary. At that time, the department's staff included Associate Professors M.T. Achilov, Y.R. Zamanov, and L.S. Karpina; Assistant (and Candidate of Medical Sciences) A.I. Ismailov; Assistant F.O. Mizamov; Assistant (and Candidate of Medical Sciences) I.Sh. Shonazarov; and Assistants N.A. Kurbonov, G.K. Elmurodov, and R.F. Akhmedov.
Yuliy Rafkatovich Zamanov graduated from the Samarkand State Medical Institute in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he completed a clinical residency in anesthesiology and intensive care. From 1970 to 1985, he worked as an assistant at the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care.

Yu.R. Zamanov defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in 1976.
From 1985 to 1995, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Samarkand State Medical Institute. From 1995 to 2005, he headed the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care within the Faculty of Postgraduate Education at Samarkand State Medical Institute.
In recognition of his exemplary work in teaching and clinical practice, Yuliy Rafkatovich Zamanov was awarded the "Excellence in Healthcare" badge in 2010 (an award from the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan).
From 2005 to 2022, Y. R. Zamanov served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Endoscopy, and Anesthesiology-Intensive Care at Samarkand State Technical University. He is the author of over 150 scientific publications.
From 2023 to 2024, the department was headed by Associate Professor Nizom Azizovich Kurbanov, PhD in Medical Sciences.

In a short time, he established himself as a promising professional with a keen interest in surgical research. His work at the department was characterized by diligence and an attentive, cordial attitude toward his colleagues. In 2022, he defended his research thesis titled "Improving the Surgical Treatment of Gallstone Disease Complicated by Mirizzi Syndrome." He was awarded the academic rank of Associate Professor in 2023. He has authored over 100 scientific publications and has participated in numerous domestic and international scientific conferences throughout his career.
Department staff
Professor Kasim Erdonovich Rakhmanov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, was elected Head of the Department starting from the 2024 academic year. Since 2024, the department has operated at the multidisciplinary clinic of Samarkand State Medical University and the Samarkand Branch of the Republican Scientific Center for Emergency Medical Care. Five Candidate of Medical Sciences dissertations have been defended under the scientific supervision of Professor K.E. Rakhmanov, and he has published over 300 scientific works.
Currently, the department employs 10 faculty members, including three professors, five associate professors, and two assistant lecturers. The department’s current level of academic qualification stands at 90%. The defense of a Candidate of Sciences dissertation by another faculty member is scheduled for the current academic year, while three other staff members are continuing work on their Doctor of Sciences dissertations.
During the 2026 academic year, department staff published 38 research articles (28 in domestic and 14 in international publications, including 6 in journals indexed in Scopus), as well as 5 textbooks, 5 study guides, 4 monographs, 5 patents, and 2 teaching manuals.
Associate Professor F.R. Abdurakhmonov and Assistant Z.K. Yusupova successfully defended their doctoral and Candidate of Science dissertations, respectively, and received diplomas from the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In the 2026 academic year, under the supervision of the Head of the Department, Professor K.E. Rakhmanov (two candidates), and Professor I.Sh. Shonazarov (three candidates), researchers successfully defended their Candidate of Science dissertations and received diplomas from the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
SPIRITUAL AND EDUCATIONAL WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT
In society, doctors are viewed as accomplished, mature individuals. Caring for the younger generation and striving to raise healthy, mature individuals is a hallmark of the Uzbek national character. Consequently, spiritual and educational outreach constitutes a vital aspect of the work carried out by the Department of Surgery, Endoscopy, Anesthesiology, and Intensive Care at the State Medical University. This work is conducted on an ongoing basis in accordance with an approved plan. These activities are coordinated and organized by the Head of the Department—Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor K.E. Rakhmanov—and the faculty member responsible for this area, Associate Professor Golibjon Karshiyevich Elmuradov.
Faculty members conducted the following activities with students:
- Sessions on spirituality were held regularly on Thursdays, in accordance with the schedule. In addition, a five-minute discussion took place every morning with attending physicians, clinical residents, master’s program residents, and medical interns, covering the latest news as well as spiritual and educational topics;
- The dissemination of information regarding the works and speeches of President Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, as well as the resolutions and decisions of the Oliy Majlis and the Cabinet of Ministers, will be ensured; furthermore, spiritual and educational events aimed at fostering a harmoniously developed generation and strengthening universal, national, and spiritual values among the youth will be conducted in the following areas:
- the successful implementation and promotion of constructive reforms in the republic;
- the cultivation of a philosophy of a healthy lifestyle among trainees, clinical residents, and master's students;
- raising the level of political and legal awareness among clinical residents and master's students;
- keeping students, clinical residents, and master's students promptly informed about socio-political and cultural events taking place in the country and the world;
- fostering a healthy spiritual atmosphere and positive interpersonal relationships among trainees, clinical residents, and master's students;
- organizing leisure activities for students, clinical residents, and master's students that align with the educational institution's profile and specialization, and facilitating their participation in various events.
In addition, during the course of study, it is worth visiting our city's historical monuments and the university museum together with the audience.
EDUCATIONAL AND METHODOLOGICAL WORK
At the department, physicians undergo professional training as part of postgraduate education in fields such as surgery, anesthesiology and intensive care, and urology. Furthermore, they acquire the necessary professional qualifications by completing initial specialization and advanced training courses in these disciplines. The department also trains highly qualified specialists through master's degree and clinical residency programs.
Specialists enhance their professional qualifications by completing general (144 hours) and specialized (54 or 72 hours) professional development courses in the aforementioned areas.
In addition, specialization courses in surgery are offered:
- general surgery (specialization course — 864 hours; advanced specialization training course — 504 hours);
- fibroendoscopy (specialization course — 504 hours);
- initial specialization course in "Emergency Medical Care (103)" (216 hours);
- initial specialization course in "Vascular Surgery" (504 hours).
In the specialty of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care:
- initial specialization course in anesthesiology and intensive care (864 hours);
- advanced training course in anesthesiology and intensive care (504 hours).
In the specialty of Urology:
- initial specialization course in endourology (504 hours);
- initial specialization course in general urology (864 hours).
The educational process is conducted in accordance with the following approved documents:
– qualification profile;
– state standard;
– curriculum;
– course syllabus;
– educational technologies, including:
– amendments made pursuant to Order No. 180 of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan;
– approved diagnostic standards;
– international guidelines;
– modern educational technologies (graphic organizers, the case study method, and project-based learning).
The following technical equipment is provided to support the educational process:
A telecommunications system has been deployed to display subject-specific video materials, presentations, multimedia programs, lectures, and practical session materials using televisions and video projectors connected to a central computer. Additionally, a centralized bank of scanned images has been created to standardize instruction and align with all sections of the curriculum.
Departmental Electronic Library:
- The library collection comprises over 110 educational resources in English, Uzbek, and Russian.
- The electronic library includes textbooks, atlases, study guides, methodological materials, and other resources.
During training sessions, all necessary conditions are provided for trainee physicians, clinical residents, and master's students to participate in—and independently perform—modern instrumental diagnostic procedures on patients relevant to the topic of study.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WORKS
The department's research activities focus on fostering a commitment to the ideals of independence among the younger generation, shaping the legal culture of youth, exploring the philosophical issues of modern medical science, and studying various aspects of the history of Uzbek statehood.
All department staff members actively participate in the research activities of both the department and the university. The academic staff comprises ten individuals: two Doctors of Technical Sciences (professors), one Candidate of Technical Sciences (professor), one Doctor of Technical Sciences, four Candidates of Technical Sciences (associate professors), one Candidate of Technical Sciences (assistant), and one assistant. Currently, four staff members are conducting independent research: Associate Professors F.O. Mizamov, R.F. Akhmedov, and G‘.K. Elmurodov are working on their doctoral dissertations, while Assistant M.M. Sadullaev is working on his Candidate of Technical Sciences dissertation.
Over the past five years, department staff have published more than 300 scientific works, including 5 textbooks, 15 study guides, 7 monographs, and over 100 articles in leading domestic and international journals (including 17 indexed in Scopus); additionally, 15 computer programs were developed, 9 invention patents (IAP, FAP) were obtained, and 20 sets of methodological guidelines and 12 rationalization proposals were prepared.
Over the past five years, staff members of the department have participated in 15 international scientific conferences and received certificates.
Clinical residents and master's students undergo training at the department. They participate in research activities aligned with the scientific focus areas of the university and the department.

Citation metrics and h-indices for the research publications of seven department staff members were determined: the Head of the Department (Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor) K.E. Rakhmanov; Associate Professors (PhD) F.O. Mizamov, G.K. Elmurodov, R.F. Akhmedov, and F.R. Abdurakhmanov; Associate Professor (Candidate of Medical Sciences) M.T. Achilov; and Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor I.Sh. Shonazarov.
In the 2025–2026 academic year alone, four candidates under the academic supervision of Department Head K.E. Rakhmanov (Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor) and four candidates under the supervision of I.Sh. Shonazarov (Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor) successfully defended their dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in medical sciences.
SCIENTIFIC COMPLETION
Within the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, student research is carried out through the "Young Scientists" student research club, as well as through separate sectional meetings held at international and national student scientific and practical conferences held at Samarkand State Medical University.
Students prepare research papers on current issues in the social sciences and humanities, as well as philosophical, methodological, and bioethical issues in modern medicine, for participation in national scientific paper competitions.
All students interested in the social and humanitarian aspects of medical education and activities are invited to collaborate and are supported in advancing the club's scientific achievements.
The club's director is Associate Professor Rakhmatillo Furkatovich Akhmedov, who is currently the author of over 100 scientific publications. The junior course is supervised by F. Olimdzhonova, a third-year student in the Faculty of Medicine and Pedagogy, author and co-author of 30 scientific articles, first-place winner of the "We are against corruption" competition, and a recipient of the university rector's scholarship.
The senior course is supervised by S. Valieva, a sixth-year student in the Faculty of Pediatrics, author and co-author of 42 scientific articles, recipient of 15 diplomas, 20 certificates, 4 honorary diplomas, and 2 letters of thanks, and recipient of the rector's scholarship and the Islam Karimov scholarship.

The internationalization activities of Samarkand State Medical University are grounded in the institution's development strategy and aimed at strengthening its position within the global educational landscape. Key priorities include increasing the number of international students, implementing joint projects with foreign universities and research centers, growing the number of faculty and researchers working abroad, and expanding the network of joint programs with foreign universities that offer dual degrees. The university fosters partnerships based on the principle of equality with more than 60 international organizations, foreign universities, and research centers in the fields of education and science. Cooperation with universities in Europe, Asia, North America, and the CIS is carried out through joint programs and academic mobility projects.
The number of highly qualified specialists, lecturers, students, and researchers from abroad visiting SamDTU to establish partnerships, pursue studies, engage in professional development, and participate in scientific conferences is steadily growing.
SamDTU is ready to establish ties with educational and research centers, universities, and public organizations worldwide; the university welcomes prospective students, current students, researchers, and faculty members from abroad.
Geographic scope of collaboration: Department staff undertake professional development courses (both long-term and short-term) as part of scientific and practical collaboration with faculty from Istanbul Medical University, Kazan State Medical University, and Azerbaijan Medical University.
