HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT


  The Department of Surgery, Endoscopy, and Anesthesiology-Reanimatology of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education (PHD) of Samarkand State Medical University was established in 1983. The organizer and first head of the department at that time was the region's chief surgeon, MD, associate professor A.I. Sidorenko (1983-88). At that time, Associate Professor S.A. Abdullayev, Associate Professor, worked within the department. Mamyshev O.M., Associate Professor. Ilyasov I.I. worked.

  Since 1988, Professor S.A. Abdullaev was elected as the head of the department. In 1993-95, the department was transformed into a course, and in 1995 it was again transformed into a department. At that time, the department was located on the basis of the surgical department of the Samarkand City Clinical Hospital No. 1. After that, the department was transferred for some time to the basis of the surgical department of the Samarkand District Central Hospital. In 1997, the department was transferred from City Hospital No. 1 to the basis of the surgical department of the Regional United Hospital No. 1. In 2000, the department was transferred to the basis of the Samarkand branch of the Republican Scientific Center for Emergency Medical Care. Professor S.A. Abdullaev headed the department until the 2003-2004 academic year. During the period of the department's leadership by Professor S.A. Abdullaev, the department's staff conducted scientific research on the topic of "Chest trauma." Several textbooks, monographs and scientific articles were published. During this period, the department employed Assoc. Prof. Mamyshev O.M., Assoc. Prof. Ilyasov I.I., Assoc. Prof. Achilov M.T. carried out their activities.

Abdullayev S.A. Professor

  Since the beginning of the 2004-2005 academic year, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Zh.A. Akhtamov was elected to the department. He simultaneously worked as the director of the Samarkand branch of the Republican Scientific Center for Emergency Medical Care (RSCEMC).

  Professor Zh.A. Akhtamov was one of the first in the republic to found the Center for Multifunctional Endoscopic Surgery in 1996 on the basis of the Samarkand City Clinical Hospital No. 1 and worked as the head of this department. This department received the status of the Regional Endosurgical Center in 2002. This department received the status of the Regional Endosurgical Center in 2002.

  Zh.A. Akhtamov was one of the first in the republic to introduce methods of endoscopic operations of the abdominal cavity, pelvic organs and urinary tract into surgical practice.

  In 1996, he founded the Ibn Sino Foundation for Assistance to Medical Technologies and became the founder of the scientific and practical journal "Bulletin of a General Practitioner," which is continuously published through this foundation. He served as deputy editor-in-chief of this journal on a voluntary basis. He also contributed as the executive secretary of the journal "Surgery of Uzbekistan." Professor Zh.A. Akhtamov made a worthy contribution to the development of endoscopic surgery in Samarkand and our Republic. Under his leadership, the following treatment methods were introduced in the Samarkand branch of the RNCEM: prosthetics using a polypropylene mesh in the treatment of large, giant and postoperative recurrent hernias of the anterior abdominal wall, "Damage control" for injuries of the parenchymal organs of the abdominal cavity, "Planned laparostomy" for severe and missed peritonitis, conservative methods of treatment for injuries of the parenchymal organs of the abdominal cavity. Under his leadership, the department of Assoc. Shonazarov I.Sh. In 2008, he successfully defended his PhD thesis on the topic: "Principles of improving the treatment and prognosis of adhesive acute intestinal obstruction."   From the 2008-2009 academic year to 2023, the department was headed by Associate Professor S. I. Narzullaev. He defended his PhD thesis in 1972.

  In 1974, he was awarded the "Excellent Healthcare Worker" badge.

  Since 1984, he was awarded the title of Associate Professor. He made a significant contribution to the education of students and youth, introducing many new treatment and diagnostic methods in medicine. One of them, in Samarkand, was the first to introduce the laparoscopy method into practice as a diagnostic and differential method. S. I. Narzullaev, not sparing his rich experience and knowledge, currently teaches all students who come to the department for advanced training, teaching them a new worldview in modern medicine and the widespread use of new technological methods of diagnosis and treatment in surgery. During his career, he participated in international scientific and practical conferences in our Republic and abroad. He has published more than 200 scientific, 20 educational and educational-methodical works, many rationalization proposals and patents. For services in restoring the health of the people in connection with the 90th anniversary of the Samarkand State Institute, he was awarded the "Excellent Healthcare Worker" badge for the third time. Narzullayev S.I. Docent

  Since 2023, Nizom Azizovich Kurbanov, Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences, Associate Professor PhD, has been appointed to the department. Over the past short time, N. A. Kurbanov has demonstrated diligence in his work, attention and goodwill towards the department staff and the work process, dedication, interest in his profession and science. By this time, Assoc. Prof. Narzullaev S. I., Assoc. Prof. Achilov M. T., Assoc. Mizamov F. O., Assoc. Cand. Sci. (Eng.), Shonazarov I. Sh., Assoc. Elmurodov G. K., Assoc. Akhmedov R. F., Associate Professor Abdurakhmanov F. R., Assoc. Sadinova Yu. S., Assoc. Yusupova Z. K., Assoc. Sadullaev M. M. carried out their activities. This year, Assoc. Mizamov F. O., Assoc. Kurbonov N.A., Assoc. Elmurodov G.K., Assoc. Akhmedov R.F. and Associate Professor Shonazarov successfully defended their candidate and doctoral dissertations.

  Since September 2024, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Rakhmanov Kosim Erdanovich has been appointed Head of the Department. Since October 2024, the department has been transferred to the base of the multidisciplinary clinic of Samara State Medical University. The academic year of 2025 began with positive changes in the direction of scientific work for the department staff. Under the supervision of the Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Rakhmanov K.E., three candidate's theses were defended, and under the supervision of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Shonazarov - two. The following scientific works have been published by the department staff: domestic articles (HAC) - 48, foreign articles (HAC) - 10, Scopus articles - 6, textbook - 3, teaching aid - 4, monograph - 2, methodological recommendations - 2, computer program - 4, patent for invention (IAP, FAP) - 3, rationalization proposal - 3. At present, the following professors work at the department: Narzullaev S.I., Assoc. Prof. Achilov M.T., Assoc. SPIRITUAL AND EDUCATIONAL WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT


  At all times, doctors have been recognized in society as highly moral, well-rounded individuals, possessing not only profound professional knowledge but also a high level of spirituality. Caring for the younger generation and striving to raise healthy, well-rounded individuals is one of the distinctive features of the Uzbek national character. In this context, spiritual and educational activities occupy a special place in the work of the Department of Surgery, Endoscopy, Anesthesiology, and Resuscitation of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education.

  This activity is carried out on an ongoing basis in accordance with the approved work plan, under the coordination of the Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor K.E. Rakhmanov, and Associate Professor Golibjon Karshievich Elmuradov, PhD, responsible for spiritual and educational work. The department's faculty regularly conducts a series of activities aimed at fostering high moral and ethical values and active citizenship in cadets, clinical residents, and master's degree students. These activities include:

  Regular "Spirituality Hours" held every Thursday according to the approved schedule;

  Daily five-minute morning discussions with cadets, residents, and residents to discuss the latest news and current issues in spiritual and educational matters;

  Familiarizing students with the works and speeches of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, as well as the decrees and resolutions of the Oliy Majlis and the Cabinet of Ministers;

  Fostering high universal, national, and spiritual values in young people, developing patriotism and respect for the traditions and culture of their native country;

  Developing a healthy lifestyle philosophy and enhancing political and legal awareness;

  Providing timely information on socio-political and cultural events in the country and around the world;

  Maintaining a healthy spiritual atmosphere and fostering mutual respect among cadets and residents;

  Organizing leisure activities and engaging students in cultural and educational events in accordance with the educational institution's specialization.

  Particular attention is paid to extracurricular activities, including excursions to the city's historical monuments and visits to the university museum, which facilitate a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural heritage of the native land and the development of national identity.

  The department's spiritual and educational activities are aimed at the comprehensive development of future specialists who combine professional competence, humanism, high culture, and active citizenship.



EDUCATIONAL AND METHODOLOGICAL WORK


  The Department of Surgery, Endoscopy, and Anesthesiology and Resuscitation offers postgraduate training for physician trainees in these areas. The educational process includes advanced training courses, primary specialization courses, and recuperation cycles, enabling students to obtain the relevant specializations.

  In addition, the department has established the training of highly qualified specialists in the master's degree and clinical residency programs.

  The following educational programs are offered in the above-mentioned areas:

  General Advanced Training Cycle (GATC) - 144 hours;

  Thematic Advanced Training Cycles (TAT) - 54 and 72 hours.

  The following specialized cycles in surgery are also available:

  General Surgery - 864 hours (primary specialization), 504 hours (recuperation cycle);

  Fibroendoscopy - 504 hours (primary specialization cycle);

  Emergency Medical Care "103" - 216 hours (primary specialization cycle); Vascular Surgery - 504 hours (primary specialization cycle).

  In Anesthesiology and Resuscitation:

  Anesthesiology and Resuscitation - 864 hours (primary specialization cycle);

  Anesthesiology and Resuscitation - 504 hours (rehabilitation cycle).

  In Urology:

  Endourology - 504 hours (primary specialization cycle).

  The educational process at the department is carried out based on the following approved documents:

  •  Qualification characteristics;
  •  State educational standards;
  •  Curricula;
  •  Working curricula.

  Modern teaching technologies have been implemented in the educational process, including:

  Amendments in accordance with Order No. 80 of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan;

  Approved diagnostic standards;

  International recommendations;

  Modern teaching methods: graphic organizers, case studies, project-based method.

  Department Technical Equipment:

  The department has a modern telecommunications system. Videos, presentations, multimedia programs, lectures, and practical exercises are shown using televisions and video projectors connected to a central computer.

  A unified bank of scanned images covers all sections of the curriculum, designed to ensure unified teaching.

  The department's electronic library includes:

  Over 110 educational publications in English, Uzbek, and Russian;

  Textbooks, atlases, teaching aids, teaching materials, etc.

  During classes, physicians are provided with all the necessary conditions for participating in modern instrumental diagnostic procedures, including the participation of patients on relevant topics.


SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WORKS


  The department's research is aimed at nurturing the younger generation in the spirit of devotion to the ideas of independence, fostering a legal culture among young people, and studying the philosophical problems of modern medical science and various aspects of the history of Uzbekistan's statehood.

  All department staff members are actively involved in research activities at both the department and university levels. The department's faculty consists of 10 members, including:

  2 Doctors of Medical Sciences (MD), Associate Professors,

  1 Candidate of Medical Sciences (MD), Professor,

  7 Candidates of Medical Sciences (MD), Associate Professors.

  Currently, three members are independent postgraduate students:

  Associate Professor F.R. Abdurakhmanov is working on his doctoral dissertation,

  Assistant Professor Z.K. Yusupova is pursuing a PhD,

  Assistant Professor M.M. Sadullaev is working on his PhD dissertation. Over the past five years, the department's staff has published over 300 scientific papers, including:

  5 textbooks,

  15 teaching aids,

  7 monographs,

  over 100 articles in leading national and international journals,

  17 articles in Scopus-indexed journals,

  15 computer programs,

  6 patents for inventions (including IAP and FAP),

  20 methodological recommendations,

  12 rationalization proposals.

  Over the past five years, the department's staff has participated in 15 international scientific conferences and been awarded the corresponding certificates.

  The department trains clinical residents and master's degree students, who, in accordance with the scientific direction of the university and the department, are also actively engaged in research activities. The citation index and h-index for published materials were determined for the following seven faculty members of the department:

  In the 2025 academic year alone, under the supervision of Head of Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor K.E. Rakhmanov, three postgraduate students successfully defended their dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medical Sciences. In addition, under the scientific supervision of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor I.Sh. Shonazarov, two scientific papers were also successfully defended.


SCIENTIFIC COMPLETION


  Within the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, student research is carried out through the "Young Scientists" student research club, as well as through separate sectional meetings held at international and national student scientific and practical conferences held at Samarkand State Medical University.

  Students prepare research papers on current issues in the social sciences and humanities, as well as philosophical, methodological, and bioethical issues in modern medicine, for participation in national scientific paper competitions.

  All students interested in the social and humanitarian aspects of medical education and activities are invited to collaborate and are supported in advancing the club's scientific achievements.

  The club's director is Associate Professor Rakhmatillo Furkatovich Akhmedov, who is currently the author of over 100 scientific publications. The junior course is supervised by F. Olimdzhonova, a third-year student in the Faculty of Medicine and Pedagogy, author and co-author of 30 scientific articles, first-place winner of the "We are against corruption" competition, and a recipient of the university rector's scholarship.

  The senior course is supervised by S. Valieva, a sixth-year student in the Faculty of Pediatrics, author and co-author of 42 scientific articles, recipient of 15 diplomas, 20 certificates, 4 honorary diplomas, and 2 letters of thanks, and recipient of the rector's scholarship and the Islam Karimov scholarship.

  Samarkand State Medical University, guided by its University Development Concept and internationalization objectives, aims to strengthen its position in the international educational space. The key priorities of internationalization include increasing the number of international students, developing joint projects with foreign higher education institutions and research centers, increasing the number of researchers and faculty teaching at foreign universities, and expanding the number of joint programs with foreign universities that provide double degrees.

  The university actively collaborates with more than 60 government and international organizations, foreign universities, and research centers in the fields of education and science. This collaboration is based on the principles of equality and mutually beneficial partnership. Particular attention is paid to developing cooperation with universities in Europe, Asia, North America, and the CIS countries through joint programs and educational mobility. Every year, the number of highly qualified specialists, professors, students, and researchers from abroad visiting Samara State Medical University to establish partnerships, improve their qualifications, and participate in scientific conferences increases.

  Samarkand State Medical University is open to collaboration with all leading global educational and research centers, universities, and public organizations. The university's doors are always open to international applicants, undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty.

  Among these collaborations, the work of Associate Professor of Urology F. Abdurakhmanov is particularly noteworthy. He regularly takes advanced training courses of varying duration in scientific and practical collaboration with professors and faculty from Istanbul Medical University and Kazan State Medical University. His research papers are published in reputable international journals.

  Currently, the university maintains active scientific and educational ties with more than 10 foreign universities and research centers located both near and far abroad.

  For information: Professor Ates Kadi oglu served as president of the Turkish Andrology Society from 2002 to 2009, and president of the Turkish Urology Association from 2008 to 2012. He currently serves as honorary president of the Turkish Andrology Society, head of the Department of Andrology at Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, vice president of the Turkish Urology Association, coordinator of the Turkish Urology Academy, and editor-in-chief of the journal Urologia (Türkiye).

  Geography of collaboration: Associate Professor of Urology F. Abdurakhmanov, together with professors and faculty from Istanbul Medical University and Kazan State Medical University, participates in both long-term and short-term continuing education courses as part of scientific and practical collaboration. Furthermore, the results of his research are published in reputable international journals. The university maintains contacts and scientific collaborations with more than 10 higher education institutions and research centers in neighboring and distant countries.
