Research work of phthisiology department
The research activities of the Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology are focused on studying pressing issues of tuberculosis and lung diseases, early detection of tuberculosis in children and adults, investigation of the immunological and molecular‑genetic characteristics of latent tuberculosis infection, prevention of drug‑resistant tuberculosis, improvement of diagnostic and treatment methods, and the introduction of modern clinical technologies into phthisiology and pulmonology practice. Research combines fundamental and applied medicine and is carried out in accordance with the needs of the healthcare system.
Currently, the department employs one PhD Associate Professor, one PhD Assistant, and one Candidate of Medical Sciences Associate Professor. Faculty members actively participate in university research programs, innovative projects, and grants, while providing scientific and methodological guidance to independent researchers pursuing doctoral (DSc) and PhD degrees. Developing a scientific school, supporting young scientists, and enhancing research capacity are among the department’s priorities.
Over the past five years, more than 380 scientific works have been published by the department’s staff, including monographs, electronic educational resources, and articles in national and international journals. In 2025–2026, faculty members published 10 articles in journals indexed in the Scopus database, most of them in prestigious international journals belonging to Q2 and Q4 quartiles. These works addressed latent tuberculosis infection, pediatric phthisiology, tuberculosis and COVID‑19, drug‑resistant tuberculosis, and current issues in pulmonology, significantly increasing the department’s international scientific reputation.

The department maintains active collaboration with the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Phthisiology and Pulmonology, Tashkent Medical Academy, Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute, Yaroslavl, Astrakhan, and Smolensk State Medical Universities of Russia, Izhevsk State Medical Academy, Tajik State Medical University, and the Republican Scientific and Practical Center “Mother and Child” of Belarus. Within this cooperation, joint research projects, international conferences, seminars, webinars, and round tables are regularly organized.
On March 20, 2026, an international round table on “Current Issues of Phthisiology” was held online at Astrakhan State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, with active participation of faculty members from Samarkand State Medical University. Associate Professor A.A. Kim presented a report on “Primary disseminated tuberculosis with spinal and intrathoracic lymph node involvement in a one‑year‑old child,” while Assistant PhD D.N. Adjablaeva delivered a presentation on “The Epidemiological Situation of Tuberculosis in Uzbekistan.” The round table discussed pediatric phthisiology, epidemiology of tuberculosis, modern diagnostics, treatment, and prevention, as well as prospects for developing international scientific cooperation.

Special attention is given to the training of academic staff. In November 2025, Assistant D.N. Adjablaeva successfully defended her PhD dissertation on predicting and improving the prevention of latent tuberculosis infection in children. The results were implemented into healthcare practice and published in international scientific journals. Currently, the department runs a three‑year master’s program, with students conducting research under the supervision of faculty members and in collaboration with Professor Oleg Evgenyevich Russkikh of Izhevsk State Medical Academy. This cooperation enhances the scientific potential of graduate students, helps them master modern research approaches, and improves the quality of their studies.

The results of the department’s research have been widely implemented in the practice of the Samarkand Regional Center of Phthisiology and Pulmonology and the Samarkand City Tuberculosis Dispensary. Developed recommendations and practical algorithms are effectively applied to improve diagnostics, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation, thereby enhancing the quality of medical care for patients. Scientific developments contribute to the improvement of clinical protocols and the implementation of evidence-based medicine principles into practice.
