In 1985, Professor A.M. Shamsiev established the Department of Pediatric Surgery and a 60-bed pediatric surgical unit at the Regional Children’s Hospital. The leadership of the Medical Institute, headed by its Rector, Professor S.A. Aripov, provided substantial assistance and support in establishing the department.

  The department also benefited greatly from the continuous attention, professional guidance, and practical support of prominent pediatric surgeons of the former Soviet Union, including Academicians Y.F. Isakov (Moscow) and A.T. Pulatov (Dushanbe), as well as Professors N.L. Kushcha (Donetsk), Ya.K. Gauen (Riga), A.S. Sulaimonov (Tashkent), S.R. Rakhimov (Andijan), and K.S. Ormantaev (Almaty), among others.

  The founding members of the department were N.R. Mamurov, M.G. Asadullina, D.O. Atakulov, T.N. Umirov, and S.M. Musaev.

  In 1987, the Department of Pediatric Surgery was visited by Professor A. Baranov, Deputy Minister of Health of the USSR responsible for maternal and child health. At his initiative, the department was transferred to the newly constructed eight-story building of the Regional Hospital.

  In 1989, through the efforts of Professor A.M. Shamsiev and with the support of the regional administration, the building was fully allocated as the clinical base of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and granted the status of the Regional Children’s Surgical Hospital. Professor A.M. Shamsiev was appointed Chief Physician of the hospital.

  In 1990, the clinic was reorganized into the Scientific, Educational and Medical Association “Pediatric Surgery” (SEMA “Pediatric Surgery”) in accordance with Order No. 197 dated March 7, 1990. Professor A.M. Shamsiev was appointed Director General.

  In 1996, by Resolution No. 130-K of the Samarkand Regional Khokimiyat dated June 26, the Pediatric Surgery Medical Association was reorganized into the Scientific Center for Pediatric Surgery (SCPS), headed by Professor A.M. Shamsiev, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery.

  In 2014, the SCPS was reorganized as Clinic No. 2 of Samarkand State Medical Institute. Following the transformation of the institute into Samarkand State Medical University, Clinic No. 2 became the main clinical base of the Department of Pediatric Surgery. The clinic has 250 beds and includes departments of thoracic surgery, urology, emergency and purulent surgery, elective surgery, cardiac surgery, neonatal surgery, anesthesiology and intensive care, one-day surgery, and laboratory diagnostics.

Educational and Teaching Activities

  The Department of Pediatric Surgery currently provides theoretical and practical training for students of the Faculty of Pediatrics (5th–6th years), the Faculty of Medicine (5th year), and the Faculty of Medical Pedagogy (5th year), as well as for master’s residents and clinical residents.

  The educational process is conducted by experienced academic staff, including Professor A.M. Shamsiev, Professor D.O. Atakulov, Associate Professors — Doctor of Medical Sciences Sh.A. Yusupov, Candidates of Medical Sciences N.S. Boymuradov, S.S. Zainiev, and A.K. Shakhriev — as well as U.T. Suvankulov, B.L. Davranov, Senior Lecturer F.E. Makhmatkulov, B.N. Rakhmatov, N.I. Boyzhigitov, A.K. Rakhimov, and other experienced specialists.

  Practical classes are conducted in specialized classrooms and clinical departments. Alongside traditional teaching methods, including posters, color slides, and educational radiographs, modern educational technologies are actively used. These include video lectures, video fragments demonstrating complex surgical procedures, clinical videos of patients with various pathologies, and electronic textbooks and teaching materials such as Surgical Diseases in Children, Purulent Surgical Infections, and Chronic Venous Insufficiency.

  At the initiative of Professor A.M. Shamsiev, demonstrations of complex clinical cases and surgical procedures are organized using direct video transmission, enabling students and trainees to observe advanced surgical interventions in real time.

  The department has computer classrooms and a specialized library containing textbooks, monographs, and scientific journals in pediatric surgery and related medical disciplines. The library collection includes more than 100 titles, including Pediatric Surgery, Surgery, Bulletin of Surgery, Pediatrics, Surgery of Uzbekistan, and other professional publications. Students, trainees, master’s residents, and clinical residents may use the library resources both during the daytime and while on clinical duty.

Scientific Research

  Scientific research has always been one of the priority areas of the department’s activities. Research has been conducted in several major fields of pediatric surgery.

  One of the principal areas has been radical and reconstructive surgical treatment of congenital malformations of the genitourinary system. Research in this field includes the doctoral dissertation of Yu.M. Akhmedov (1992) and other scientific studies.

  Another important research area has been diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including PhD dissertations by A.S. Sarkisyan (1994) and B.A. Yuldashev (1998). Research has also been conducted on liver diseases, including the PhD dissertation of Sh.M. Irgashev (1994).

  The department has carried out extensive research into diseases of the bronchopulmonary system, purulent-septic diseases, advanced forms of peritonitis, and adhesive intestinal obstruction. Scientific studies in these areas include the dissertations of M.U. Suvankulov (1994), F.S. Raupov (1998), D.T. Rabbimov (doctoral dissertation, 2018), D.S. Toychibaev (1998), J.A. Shamsiev (2004), A.K. Shahriev (2005), U.T. Suvankulov (2006), B.L. Davranov (2008), Sh.A. Yusupov (2018), and F.S. Oripov (2018).

  Another major research direction has focused on acute and chronic hematogenous osteomyelitis. Scientific studies in this field include the dissertations of A.A. Juraev (1997), A.I. Amanov (2004), M.D. Burgutov (2013), S.S. Zainiev (2018), and Z.M. Makhmudov (2019).

  Research has also addressed postoperative ventral hernias, including the PhD dissertation of S.S. Davlatov (2019).

  A significant body of research has been devoted to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of echinococcosis in children. These studies have contributed to the development and improvement of surgical approaches to this complex parasitic disease.

Research Infrastructure and Innovation

  All necessary conditions for scientific research have been established at Clinic No. 2 of Samarkand State Medical University. At the initiative of Professor A.M. Shamsiev, immunological, biochemical, bacteriological, morphological, and experimental laboratories were established and equipped for research conducted by the department’s academic staff.

  Since 1997, research projects have been implemented within the framework of grants from the Fund for Support of Fundamental Research of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and priority programs of the State Committee for Science and Technology of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Professor A.M. Shamsiev has played a leading role in these research projects.

  Currently, the department’s academic staff continue to conduct research within applied and innovative scientific projects.

  An important foundation for the development of the department’s scientific potential is the Student Scientific Society (SSS). For more than 30 years, its members have actively participated in scientific conferences and competitions at national and international levels, achieving notable results, including 48 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals.

  Members of the Student Scientific Society regularly participate in republican and university scientific forums. Students of the society also participate annually in Republican Olympiads in Pediatric Surgery, where they have achieved prize-winning results.

  The most active and talented members of the Student Scientific Society continue their scientific careers through doctoral programs and clinical residency.

Clinical and Outreach Activities

  Alongside its educational and scientific activities, the Department of Pediatric Surgery provides specialized medical care and conducts outreach and clinical support activities.

  The specialized multidisciplinary clinical center provides round-the-clock, highly qualified surgical care to children from Samarkand, Jizzakh, Navoi, Bukhara, Kashkadarya, and Surkhandarya regions.

  More than 12,000 patients visit the clinic annually, approximately 7,000 of whom are hospitalized for further treatment. Around 5,000 complex surgical procedures are performed each year involving the heart, lungs, liver, genitourinary organs, and gastrointestinal tract.

Development of Specialized Pediatric Surgical Services

  Professor A.M. Shamsiev was one of the principal initiators of the development and organization of specialized pediatric surgical services in the Samarkand region. Under his initiative, pediatric surgeon positions and specialized hospital beds for children with surgical diseases were established in rural areas of the region.

  Every year, traveling seminars and scientific-practical conferences devoted to current issues in pediatric surgery are organized in rural districts of Samarkand Region, as well as in Kashkadarya, Navoi, Bukhara, Surkhandarya, and Jizzakh regions.

  To provide methodological, organizational, and consultative support to pediatric surgeons working in rural areas, experienced specialists from the department and clinic are assigned to the districts of Samarkand Region.

  According to an approved schedule, department and clinic specialists regularly travel to their assigned districts to provide outreach, clinical consultation, methodological guidance, and organizational support. These visits contribute to improving the quality and accessibility of specialized pediatric surgical care, strengthening cooperation between regional and district healthcare institutions, and ensuring timely consultation and referral of children requiring specialized surgical treatment.

Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery No. 1, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Yusupov Shukhrat Abdurasulovich

  Shukhrat Abdurasulovich Yusupov was born on October 21, 1966, in Samarkand. In 1989, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Pediatrics of Samarkand State Medical Institute.

  From 1989 to 1991, he completed his clinical residency at the Department of Pediatric Surgery No. 2. From 1991 to 1994, he pursued postgraduate studies at the same department.

  In 1994, under the scientific supervision of Professor A.M. Shamsiev, he successfully defended his PhD dissertation at the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute.

  From 1994 to 1996, he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pediatric Surgery No. 2. Subsequently, until 2005, he headed the Pediatric Surgery Course at the Faculty of Advanced Training of Physicians of Samarkand State Medical Institute. In 2001, he was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor.

  From 2001 to 2005, he served as Head of the Department of Clinical Residency, Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies at Samarkand State Medical Institute. From 2005 to 2020, he served as Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at Samarkand State Medical Institute.

  In 2018, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Improving the Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Widespread Appendicular Peritonitis in Children.” His scientific consultant was Professor A.M. Shamsiev.

  Since 2013, Professor Sh.A. Yusupov has served as Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery No. 1 at Samarkand State Medical Institute.

Scientific and Academic Activities

  Professor Sh.A. Yusupov is the author of 10 monographs, six of which have been published abroad, two textbooks, five teaching manuals, and more than 1,000 scientific articles and conference abstracts.

  He has also contributed to the international academic community as a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including Problems of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (Ukraine), Hospital Surgery named after L.A. Kovalchuk (Ukraine), Health, Demography and Ecology of the Finno-Ugric Peoples (Russia), Vyatka Medical Bulletin (Russia), Medical Education Today (Russia), and Avicenna Bulletin (Tajikistan).

  Professor Sh.A. Yusupov is a member of the European and Russian Associations of Pediatric Surgery. He is also a member of the Seminar and Scientific Council 04/30.12.2019.Tib.102.01, responsible for awarding the PhD degree at Samarkand State Medical University.

  Through his long-standing clinical, scientific, educational, and organizational activities, Professor Sh.A. Yusupov has made a significant contribution to the development of pediatric surgery, scientific research, postgraduate medical education, and the training of highly qualified pediatric surgeons in Uzbekistan.
