Uzbekistan continues to carry out large-scale reforms aimed at improving its healthcare system and enhancing the quality of medical education. These efforts have opened new avenues for cooperation with leading medical institutions worldwide and have significantly contributed to the modernization of national healthcare.
Noteworthy initiatives are also being implemented across the regions. Samarkand State Medical University, in particular, has been demonstrating tangible progress in the development of medical services and training programs. On December 5–6, the university hosted the VI International Olympiad of Medical University Students “Samarkand-2020”, one of the most prominent academic events of the year. Organized annually, this prestigious competition not only evaluates students’ theoretical preparation and practical skills, but also serves as an important platform for strengthening international academic ties and expanding global partnerships in medical education.
Held at a high professional standard, the Olympiad brought together more than 500 students from over 60 medical universities representing more than thirty countries, including Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, South Korea, Tajikistan, Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Belarus. Rectors of foreign medical institutions, experts, and faculty members also took part in the event.
During the opening ceremony, the Minister of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Asilbek Khudayarov, and the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Kongratbay Sharipov, addressed the participants online, extending their best wishes for success. The Rector of Samarkand State Medical University, Jasur Rizaev, along with the leaders of partner universities, emphasized the significance of the Olympiad, which for the sixth consecutive year has played a vital role in fostering international cooperation and supporting the professional development of future medical specialists.
The festive part of the ceremony featured musical performances that created an uplifting and vibrant atmosphere.
The main program of the Olympiad included 43 disciplines, with participants competing in two stages — theoretical testing and demonstration of practical skills. Students also worked with 7th-generation simulation robots, allowing for assessment of their competencies in conditions closely resembling real clinical practice. Additionally, an international competition was held for students of medical colleges and technical schools, including the Abu Ali Ibn Sina Public Health Technical School of Uzbekistan.
Participants attended masterclasses conducted by leading national and international specialists on topics in fundamental medicine, modern research methodologies, and current issues in clinical practice. Rectors of foreign medical universities delivered lectures tailored for undergraduate, graduate, and clinical residency students.
The Olympiad program also featured a start-up competition, scientific clubs for young researchers, and various sporting events.
A highlight of the week was the White Coat Ceremony organized for first-year students enrolled in the joint educational program of Samarkand State Medical University and Turkey’s University of Health Sciences. Rectors Jasur Rizaev and Kamalettin Aydın congratulated the students and presented them with symbolic white coats.
Another important event was the grand opening of the university’s new Language Academy, a specialized center designed to support medical professionals in acquiring foreign-language proficiency and enhancing their ability to communicate effectively in professional contexts.
The Olympiad concluded with a solemn closing ceremony, where winners, runners-up, and distinguished participants were awarded diplomas, certificates, and commemorative gifts.
